Booq Mamba Daypack – Accessory Review
Recently we’ve had the chance to present you with our first two accessory reviews, namely the Booq Viper Sleeve and the Fibre Snapcase. Both were great protection items to keep your prized possessions safe when commuting, or simply when you’re not actively using your hardware. Of course this isn’t all that Booq provided us with, seeing we are able to present you with our views of Booq’s Mamba Daypack today.
Having the habit of going off on first impressions, this time will be no different. The Mamba Daypack looks like a classy yet ‘great for every occasion’ kind of backpack. Whilst the exterior is quite simple, the jute fiber on the outside makes it look more ‘dressed up’ than most of the regular backpacks you’ll find at your local clothing or sporting stores. The Mamba Daypack does not suffer from excessive clutter on its exterior either, seeing you have one zipper to open up the pack and one zipper for a small front pouch to store several smaller items. Design wise this is a backpack that could serve for many different age groups or purposes.
The backside of the backpack has its own soft padding to ensure comfort when wearing it, be it filled to the brim or fairly empty. The extra padding on the straps are slightly thinner but provide the same comfortable feeling. A lot of brands often use harder plastic substances as padding, to allow more air to come through, which in turn prevents a sweaty back when running around for longer periods of time. Booq decided to choose comfort above all, using soft padding and fabric, which also lets through a decent amount of air – and in the end feels a lot more comfortable than many others on the market.
When using the backpack for longer periods of time, your shoulders will not get annoyed as with most other brands. The padding in the straps remove a lot of the normal strain you would experience. Combine this with the fact that the Mamba Daypack is quite light in weight and you’ll have a more fun experience, when taking longer trips.
Protection for your laptop, tablet or other hardware goodies, is the most important task you would want your backpack to stand for. A lot of so called laptop bags often lose their shape or just don’t provide enough support or lack the necessary padding for your items to remain safe. The Mamba Daypack proves to be a valuable asset in all of those departments. The shape remains true to its original shape, even after applying a decent amount of stress and on top of that, there’s ample padding which takes a lot of the applied pressure. Of course, when a backpack stays in shape (no pun intended) it is probably not for anyone who takes advantage of flimsier bags to cram in an extra item or two, hoping it will fit in by stretching the fabric.
Realizing you will need more than your laptop when going to school, work or a local LAN party, the Mamba Dapypack does its best to offer you with enough room and pouches for you to put your papers, binders or other goodies. The inside is coated with nylon, which offers you a scratch-free zone for you to insert your laptop or tablet without a sleeve.
On the inside you will find:
- a separate section to fit in your 15” laptop or MacBook;
- a pouch for your tablet;
- two smaller pouches for a Smartphone, or other small items;
- two pen holders;
- a removeable key chain.
Most of these spaces provide more than enough room, but sadly not everything can be as perfect as up to this point. Even though the backpack is designed to fit a 15” laptop or MacBook, when combining your Mamba Daypack with the Viper Sleeve – if you’re in to extra protection – it will simply not fit inside the backpack. Luckily this is only the case with harder sleeves, that have thicker borders. The second problem the Mamba Daypack has is the fact that the top opening doesn’t open all that far. This has to do with the fact that the opening itself is smaller than with most other backpacks as well as the fact that the backpack is quite sturdy and does not bend that easily. Thus sometimes the advantage of having a backpack that does not lose its shape can be annoying. Again this is only a small annoyance, especially when you notice that you can fit in a decent amount of items within Booq’s backpack.
One last fun feature Booq’s Mamba Daypack has is the ‘Terralinq’ function. Basically this is a lost and found function. You can create an account on the Terralinq site, register your product and by doing so, the bag will be linked to you. When you should lose your bag when travelling, the bag can be scanned and thus it can be reunited with its owner. (Of course, hoping it will be found by someone honest is surely a thing to do as well, in such a scenario.)
Conclusion
We’ve survived the big ‘boom’ of nearly every brand developing their own line of laptop backpacks and lately the more qualitative brands are earning their place in the spotlight. Booq’s Mamba Daypack is one of those backpacks that proves to be a great buy, when in need of a decent looking piece of protection for your hardware, as well as offer a decent amount of space to bring along other necessities to survive school, work or gaming sessions on location.
